Why Is My Net Salary Lower Than I Expected? | Staff Pay blog

Short answer: Compare your payslip to your offer letter. Net pay drops when tax, pension, new deductions, pro-rated first months, or one-off adjustments change. The fix is almost always in the deduction lines, not a mystery fee.

Sound familiar?

You did the mental math on gross pay. The bank alert told a different story.

If you expected ₦400k and saw ₦320k, something on the slip explains it. Find that line before panic-posting in the group chat.

Reason 1: You budgeted from gross, not net

Offers quote gross. Banks credit net. First-month shock is extremely common for new hires.

Fix: Rebuild your budget from the payslip net line.

Reason 2: PAYE went up (2026 tax rules)

The Nigeria Tax Act 2026 changed bands and reliefs. A raise, lost rent relief declaration, or year-end true-up can bump PAYE.

Fix: Ask HR how taxable income was calculated this month.

Reason 3: Pension or NHF started

Employee pension (8%) on pensionable pay is standard. NHF may appear if your employer applies it.

Fix: Confirm which allowances are pensionable on your structure.

Reason 4: Pro-rated first paycheck

Starting mid-month often means partial gross for the first period, sometimes plus a full second month later, or the opposite pattern depending on employer policy.

Fix: Read the pay period on the slip, not only the amount.

Reason 5: Loan, advance, or cooperative deduction

Salary advances, staff loans, or cooperative savings often repay through payroll.

Fix: Check for new loan or other deduction lines. You usually signed something.

Reason 6: Bonus or arrears taxed in one month

A back pay or bonus can push that month's taxable income into a higher effective slice even if base salary unchanged.

Fix: Ask if tax was calculated on annualized basis or current month only.

Reason 7: Wrong bank account or partial transfer

Rare but real: payroll sent partial pay or an old account.

Fix: Compare payslip net to bank credit. If they differ, finance needs a trace reference.

Reason 8: Unlawful deductions

Deductions not in your contract and not required by law are a red flag.

Fix: Written challenge to HR. Keep payslips. See escalation paths if unresolved.

Email template that works

"My net pay for [period] was [amount], lower than I expected. Please share how gross, PAYE, pension, and other deductions were calculated for this run."

Professional tone gets answers faster.

When it clicks

You negotiate and budget with numbers, not guesswork. The headline salary finally makes sense in your real life.

A calmer way to handle this

Transparent payslips tied to payouts reduce "where did my money go?" every month. Employers: try Staff Pay. Employees: ask your HR if they issue slips through Staff Pay.
