National Minimum Wage and PAYE in Nigeria

How the monthly minimum wage threshold can affect PAYE estimates, and why a small salary change can change your tax picture.

Updated 31 August 20262 min read

Short answer: Staff Pay Tax Lab applies a national minimum wage monthly threshold (currently ₦70,000 in the approved engine parameters). At or below that gross monthly salary, the calculator may show ₦0 estimated PAYE with explanatory copy. This is an estimate for planning — not a universal declaration that no tax applies in every legal scenario.

Why minimum wage appears in tax calculators

PAYE is computed from taxable income after statutory deductions and reliefs. For employees on the lowest regular wages, law and engine rules can produce no monthly PAYE in a representative estimate.

Tax Lab surfaces this so payslip checks at minimum wage do not look "broken" when PAYE shows zero.

The threshold used in Tax Lab

The engine uses a versioned ₦70,000 per month gross threshold (see Staff Pay statutory parameters). When your entered gross monthly salary is at or below this amount:

  • Estimated monthly PAYE may be ₦0
  • Copy explains that the national minimum wage threshold was applied in the estimate
  • Other deductions (pension, NHF if enabled) may still appear depending on your toggles

The "cliff" at one naira above

A salary of ₦70,000 and ₦70,001 can produce different estimated PAYE because progressive bands apply to taxable income above the zero-rate annual slice. Small gross changes near the threshold are a common source of "why did my tax jump?" questions.

This is a planning quirk of representative monthly math, not proof that real employers round salaries to avoid tax.

What zero PAYE does not mean

Zero estimated PAYE in Tax Lab does not mean:

  • You never need to file or reconcile annual tax
  • Other statutory deductions are automatically zero
  • Your employer has remitted anything to any authority
  • You are exempt from tax in every future month if your salary increases

If your pay rises above the threshold, rerun the estimate with your new gross.

NMW message in results

When the engine sets the national minimum wage flag, Tax Lab shows explanatory copy alongside the result. The wording is estimate-only — counsel-approved public copy, August 2026.

Test your salary

Open Staff Pay Tax Lab and enter your gross monthly salary. Try ₦70,000 and ₦70,001 side by side to see how the estimate changes.
