Pension Deductions in Nigeria: Employee and Employer Shares
How employee pension is estimated on Basic, Housing and Transport, and how employer pension affects total payroll cost.
Short answer: Under the Pension Reform Act framework used in payroll, employees commonly contribute 8% of pensionable emoluments (Basic, Housing and Transport). Employers often contribute 10% on top of pay — that employer share affects total payroll cost, not employee take-home. Staff Pay Tax Lab estimates both separately.
Employee pension (8%)
When pension is enabled in Tax Lab, employee pension is estimated at 8% of pensionable Basic + Housing + Transport.
Pensionable pay depends on your salary split. The default example is 50% Basic, 30% Housing, 20% Transport — adjust under Adjust assumptions to match your payslip structure.
Employee pension:
- Reduces taxable income before PAYE bands are applied (in the Staff Pay employee engine path)
- Is not the same as PAYE — it funds retirement savings via your Pension Fund Administrator (PFA)
- Appears as its own line on your payslip and in Tax Lab's deduction breakdown
Employer pension (10%)
Employers often contribute an additional 10% of pensionable emoluments. This is a company cost on top of gross salary.
In Tax Lab:
- Employee mode focuses on what is deducted from your pay
- Payroll cost mode adds employer pension to show total monthly spend for one employee
Employer pension does not reduce your net pay, but it matters for budgeting and compliance.
Pension vs "money going to government"
PAYE is tax withheld for remittance to tax authorities. Pension contributions go to retirement savings, not government general revenue. Tax Lab keeps PAYE, pension, and NHF on separate lines so the breakdown stays clear.
NHF is separate
National Housing Fund (NHF), when enabled, is commonly estimated at 2.5% of Basic in Tax Lab. Treatment varies by employer policy. It is not pension and is labelled separately.
What the calculator does not model
- Voluntary additional voluntary contributions (AVC)
- Different pension rates negotiated in collective agreements (unless they match the statutory floor used here)
- Past service or legacy schemes outside the standard contributory model
