Short answer: Start with gross pay (everything you earned), then follow each deduction line to net pay (what hit your bank). If net pay does not match your credit alert, compare the pay period and one-off deductions before assuming payroll made a mistake.
Sound familiar?
You got a payslip for a loan application but the deduction lines look like another language.
Most salary confusion is not fraud. It is unread slips: people scan the bottom number and skip the middle. Learning to read a Nigerian payslip takes five minutes and saves arguments with HR every month.
The top section: who, when, and how much in total
Look for:
- Employer name
- Your name and employee ID
- Pay period (e.g. August 2026)
- Payment date (when money should land)
If the pay period does not match the month you worked, ask before the payment date passes. Mid-month starters often see pro-rated first slips.
Earnings: where gross pay comes from
Typical earning lines:
- Basic salary
- Housing allowance
- Transport allowance
- Other allowances (meal, utility, remote stipend)
- Bonuses or commissions (sometimes on a separate line)
Gross pay is the sum of earnings before deductions. Your offer letter may quote one headline number; the slip breaks it into parts. That is normal when employers structure pay for pension and tax.
Deductions: what leaves before your account
Common deduction lines on a staff payslip in Nigeria:
| Line | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| PAYE | Income tax withheld monthly |
| Pension | Your 8% employee contribution |
| NHF | National Housing Fund (where applied) |
| NHIS | Health insurance share (where applied) |
| Loan repayment | Salary advance or staff loan |
| Other | Union dues, cooperative, or agreed deductions |
Every deduction should be explainable. If a new line appears without notice, email HR with the slip attached.
Net pay: the number that matters for rent and food
Net pay = gross earnings minus all deductions.
Your bank alert should match net pay on or within one business day of the payment date. Small timing gaps happen with weekend pay days or bank processing.
Year-to-date (YTD) columns
Some payslips show YTD gross, YTD tax, or YTD pension. Useful when:
- You plan tax filing or relief claims
- You check whether annual tax is tracking fairly
- You compare job offers mid-year
If YTD is missing, you can still reconstruct from past slips or ask HR for a summary.
Red flags worth escalating calmly
- Net pay below minimum wage for a covered role (compare contract and law)
- Duplicate deductions in the same month
- PAYE that does not match your understanding of current bands
- Pay period on the slip does not match days you worked
Document in writing. Calm escalation beats group-chat rumours.
How to verify PAYE on your slip
Under the 2026 Nigeria Tax Act, the first ₦800,000 of annual taxable income is taxed at 0%. Higher bands apply above that. Your taxable income is not the same as gross pay because pension and certain reliefs reduce the base.
You do not need to become a tax accountant. You need enough literacy to ask: "Can you show how taxable income was calculated this month?"
If your employer does not give payslips
You are entitled to clarity on how you are paid. Request:
- A monthly payslip or pay summary in writing
- YTD totals if you need them for a loan or visa
- A point of contact for deduction questions
If silence continues, see our guide on unpaid or unclear pay.
Do this today
- Net pay below minimum wage for a covered role (compare contract and law)
- Duplicate deductions in the same month
- PAYE that does not match your understanding of current bands
- Pay period on the slip does not match days you worked
When it clicks
Every line on your slip makes sense. You can explain net pay to a bank, landlord, or yourself.
A calmer way to handle this
Employers can issue clear digital payslips tied to actual payouts. Employees on Staff Pay see slips in their staff portal. Need a one-off slip? Use the free /payslip-generator. Running payroll? Create an account.
