Short answer: Total employer cost is more than gross salaries. You also model PAYE (withheld from staff), pension, NHF where applicable, and optional statutory lines such as NSITF, ITF, and group life. Staff Pay Tax Calculator lets you roll up multiple pay bands and see PAYE grouped by state.

What employers pay beyond gross salary

When you budget payroll, include:

  • Gross pay for each employee or pay band
  • Employer pension (commonly 10% of pensionable emoluments when enabled)
  • PAYE withheld from employees and remitted to the relevant authority
  • Statutory lines you choose to model (ITF may apply at 5+ employees or higher turnover)

The calculator shows total employer cost and PAYE by jurisdiction so you can plan cash flow before payday.

Multiple staff and states

If your team sits in different states, PAYE jurisdiction context matters for planning even though federal bands are the same in this tool. Add a pay band per state or salary level, then review the state rollup in results.

Year-end planning (Form H1 warm-up)

Employer mode also surfaces an annual summary: gross, PAYE, pension, and per-state PAYE buckets. Use it as a warm-up before January filing season. It is an estimate from the assumptions you enter, not a filed return.
